Immunology from the East

The European Journal of Immunology invited representatives of two members of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), Japan and Turkey (also an EFIS member), to present their societies in this month's 'News and EFIS' section. Below the organising committees are introduced, they describe to us what activities were organised for the Day of Immunology, and give us an insight into the promotion of immunology in their respective countries.

Hot topics for hot discussions

As this issue goes to press in scorching temperatures, this month's News and EFIS focuses on Summer Schools and Society meetings in June, 2007. We have a piece from Paola Ricciardi-Castagnoli, a member of the Executive Committee here at the European Journal of Immunology and the president of the Council of the European Network of Immunological Institutes (ENII), informing us about the two successful ENII Summer Schools of 2006 and 2007. Also, we have two short notices about Society meetings held this month: one from the Italian Society of Immunology, and one from the Scandinavian Society of Immunology.

April 2007

Anniversaries, Societies and immunology

As Wiley celebrates its bicentennial throughout 2007 so the British Society for Immunology (BSI) celebrates its establishment 50 years ago. In the April issue, the history, organisation and activities of the BSI are detailed. We hope that, although presenting Societies based in Europe, such features in News and EFIS will stimulate international interest and cooperation.

Imaging, lymphoid tissue and books by Nobel Prize winners

Catherine Sautes-Fridman presented, in the January issue of EJI, her personal scientific highlights of ECI-2006. To complement this, the organisers of two of the ECI-2006 satellite meetings have written brief reports on their meetings. These provide further insight into the diversity and excellence of ECI-2006. Details of upcoming meetings associated with the Swiss Immunology Society and its members are also given in this section, together with a personal review of 'The Beginner's Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize'.

January 2007

Introducing EFIS and its Board

EJI is an international Journal and many of its readers may know very little about EFIS, its organisation, role and the opportunities this Society offers immunologists, particularly following the formal partnership with EJI. This first 'News and EFIS' section will provide you with all the answers and more. EFIS (the European Federation of Immunological Societies) is, as the name implies, the umbrella organisation for the national Immunology Societies based within the European area. It is governed by a Board of five members, who are elected by the EFIS General Assembly which is, in turn, composed of delegates of the national Immunological Societies (each Society is entitled to have one delegate per 500 members). The current Board members, their research and their hopes for the EJI-EFIS partnership are introduced in this month’s feature.
