The European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) is the federation
of 27 societies of immunology in 31 countries in the European area. These are
the Immunological Societies of Austria, Baltic Countries (Estonia, Latvia,
Lithuania), Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany,
Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Russia, Scandinavian Countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway,
Sweden), Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and United
Kingdom. Altogether, members of Immunology Societies which belong to EFIS
are more than 16,000 immunologists.
EFIS aims at promoting the advancement of research and education in
Immunology, especially by encouraging contacts between members of its constituent
societies. It does this by:
-
Publishing the scientific journal Immunology Letters ;
-
Organizing large-size European Immunology Meetings, hosted by one EFIS
member, that are held every three years ;
-
Supporting small-size EFIS Conferences (formerly Paul Ehrlich Conferences),
focused on topics at the cutting edge of Immunology;
-
Supporting advanced courses in immunology named John Humphrey Courses;
-
Providing bursaries to enable young scientists to attend immunology meetings;
-
Participating in the elaboration of guidelines aiming at defining training
requirements and rules of good laboratory practice for receiving accreditation
to practice Medical Immunology in Europe;
-
Building up and maintaining effective communication among immunologists
within all parts of the European area and reducing former barriers to scientific
information exchange.
EFIS has a Board composed of the President, the Vice-President, the Past-President,
the Treasurer, the European Community Liaison Officer and the Secretary
General. The Board meets about three times a year. Board Members are elected
by the EFIS General Assembly, composed of delegates of national societies
(each society is entitled to have one delegate per 500 members), and they
are appointed for a period of three years. Current Board Members (elected
in September 2000) are:
President: Stefan HE Kaufmann (Germany),
