EFIS-Schering-Plough Prize
The prize established by the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) with financial support from Schering-Plough is intended to recognize individuals or a group of individuals who have made an outstanding discovery related to immune processes in human disease pathogenesis, prevention and therapy. The prize is awarded every three years in conjunction with the European Congress of Immunology (ECI), and is sponsored by Schering-Plough.
This prize consists of a € 50,000 cash award plus travel support to attend the ECI 2009. The laureate must be prepared to present his/her work at the ECI during the award ceremony which will be held during the opening session and may also be invited to give a lecture at one of the Schering-Plough research sites (California or Netherlands).
The first Prize was awarded to Prof. Dr. Alberto Mantovani from Milan on the occasion of the 1st ECI in September 2006 in Paris for his outstanding discovery of immune processes pertinent to human disease pathogenesis, prevention and therapy.
The prize was awarded for the second time on the occasion of the 2nd European Congress of Immunology, held in Berlin in 2009. The Prize went to Prof. Dr. Michael Reth from Freiburg to honour his outstanding achievements in the clarification of the activation processes of immune cells, on a molecular level.
Nomination procedure 2009:
This award competition is open to members of EFIS, who work in a European research institution. Candidates must have an outstanding record of achievement in immunology.
Candidates must be nominated by a member society of EFIS, or a regular EFIS member in good standing. One cannot nominate oneself. EFIS Board Members are not eligible to nominate or recommend candidates; EFIS Board Members cannot be nominated. Nominees will be evaluated by the EFIS Board.

Please submit the following in the nomination package:
- A nomination letter of not more than three pages submitted and signed by a regular EFIS member in good standing indicating the nominee’s qualification for the award. The letter should describe the nominee’s contributions to research.
- Nominee’s curriculum vitae, including education and fellowship (institution, date and degrees, awards, employment history and bibliography (complete citation with titles).
- A list of 20 most important publications.
