Celebrating Excellence in Immunology on the 50th Anniversary of EFIS
The European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) played a central role at the 19th International Congress of Immunology (IUIS 2025), marking the 50th anniversary of its founding with a rich program of events and activities.
At the heart of these celebrations was a landmark moment: the presentation of the first-ever EFIS Lifetime Achievement Award, inaugurated to commemorate this significant anniversary. The award was bestowed upon Professor Klaus Rajewsky, whose nomination by the German Society for Immunology (DGfI) recognized his extraordinary contributions to science and his lasting influence as a mentor.
Following the conferral of the award by EFIS President Bojan Polić—who himself had the privilege of working in Professor Rajewsky’s laboratory in Cologne early in his career, adding a deeply personal dimension to the occasion—Professor Rajewsky delivered an inspiring lecture reflecting on his 60 years in science. He traced his scientific journey from his early days as a postdoctoral researcher to his many years as a principal investigator, sharing formative memories, transformative collaborations, and reflections on the evolution of immunology over the decades.
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Rajewsky has worked across Europe and the United States, establishing world-leading research programs and mentoring generations of immunologists. His collaborations have spanned the globe, including long-standing ties with colleagues in Japan, underscoring his enduring impact on international science.
The lecture hall was filled with colleagues, collaborators, former students, and early-career scientists, who honored him with a prolonged standing ovation. The emotional and uplifting ceremony was followed by a celebratory lunch reception, where many participants took the opportunity to personally congratulate Professor Rajewsky.
This new EFIS award not only celebrates groundbreaking scientific achievements but also recognizes Professor Rajewsky’s exceptional mentorship and his role as a source of inspiration across generations of immunologists.
A video featuring highlights from the ceremony—including Professor Rajewsky’s full presentation—can be found below.
Congratulations, Professor Rajewsky, and thank you for your vision, brilliance, and generosity—and for inspiring the next generation of immunologists.
